Measure chest circumference

Chest Circumference

Chest circumference: The measure of volume and presence. It defines the basic width of the shirt and determines whether the fabric spans tightly across the chest or falls elegantly when you move.

  • Position: At the widest part of the chest, directly under the armpits.
  • Posture: Stand relaxed, breathe normally, and do not puff out your chest.
  • Goal: Determine the circumference during normal breathing.

Guide the tape measure under your arms and across the fullest part of your chest. It is essential that the tape measure runs absolutely horizontally across the shoulder blades on your back. Check this in a mirror if possible. Exhale calmly during the measurement to record the circumference in a relaxed state.

Notes & Tips: A common mistake is "pumping up" the upper body by taking a deep breath. This leads to a shirt that is much too wide in everyday life and creates unsightly fabric folds when sitting. The tape measure should fit snugly but not constrict the skin.

Important Note:

This guide is for determining your individual anatomical measurements (body measurements). These values are not identical to the measurements of a finished shirt, as a tailor adds a comfort allowance depending on the desired fit (e.g., Slim Fit or Comfort Fit).

Preparation:

Ideally, measure in light underwear or on bare skin. Stand relaxed and upright. A second person for support significantly increases accuracy.
