Measure shoulder width

Shoulder Width

Shoulder width: The frame of your shirt. The shoulder seam is the calling card of a good shirt. It must end exactly where your natural shoulder meets the upper arm.

  • Position: From the left to the right shoulder bone across the neck.
  • Important: Follow the natural curve of the shoulder area.

Feel for the outer ends of your shoulder bones on both sides. Measure the distance across the neck from bone to bone. The tape measure should slightly follow the arch of your back and not be stretched like a string.

Notes & Tips: Since it is almost impossible to take this measurement precisely alone, a helping hand is essential here. A measurement that is too wide causes the shoulder to "overhang", making the shirt appear too big.

Important Note:

This guide is for determining your individual anatomical measurements (body measurements). These values are not identical to the measurements of a finished shirt, as a tailor adds a comfort allowance depending on the desired fit (e.g., Slim Fit or Comfort Fit).

Preparation:

Ideally, measure in light underwear or on bare skin. Stand relaxed and upright. A second person for support significantly increases accuracy.
